Abstract: The tension between an oligarchical and a democratic conception of politics is parallel to the tension between an elitist or a universalist conception of knowledge. Both poles of both tensions are, in the platonic text Statesman, related to the complexity of the nautical metaphor that governs the political argument.
Keywords: knowledge, socio-cultural system, enlightenment, politics, Platonism
