Necessity and What Depends on Us. On Marcelo Boeri’s Interpretation of Stoic Compatibilism
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper discusses Marcelo Boeri’s interpretation of Stoic compatibilism, the thesis that natural determinism does not rule out that we can genuinely be responsible for our actions. According to Boeri, the Stoic hold that this is so because our actions are to a great extent free from determination. The discussion of this interpretation is based on an analysis of the ancient concept of what depends on us and of Stoic concepts of determinism and modality.
