Sections
Crítica has six sections:
1. Articles
2. Discussion Notes
3. Book Symposia
4. Article Symposia
5. Survey Articles
6. Reviews
1. Articles
Articles are original texts addressed primarily to academic philosophers and philosophy students. Their main goal is to make a contribution that advances relevant philosophical debates.
Crítica welcomes submissions in all areas of contemporary philosophy, as long as they fall within the analytic tradition broadly understood. It also accepts contributions to the history of philosophy, provided they focus on philosophical problems and arguments rather than on exegetical or contextual aspects of historical figures or periods. In addition, Crítica publishes articles that draw on empirical evidence to engage with issues of philosophical relevance.
The maximum length for an article is 10,000 words (excluding references). Articles deemed suitable for the journal are sent for external peer review.
2. Discussion Notes
Discussion Notes are short texts that respond to an original article published in Crítica or elsewhere. They are expected to engage directly with the arguments presented in the original article. When responding to an article published outside Crítica, the acceptance threshold is higher.
Discussion Notes must not exceed 5,000 words (excluding references). If deemed suitable for Crítica, they are reviewed by two external referees and/or members of the Editorial Board. Authors of the original articles may be invited to reply; such replies are subject to the same review process as the Discussion Notes themselves.
3. Book Symposia
Members of the Editorial Board regularly select noteworthy books in the analytic tradition and invite experts to discuss them in Book Symposia. Each symposium includes a Précis of the book (2,000–3,000 words) written by the author, presenting the book’s main claims and arguments; three to five Commentaries (approximately 4,000 words each); and the Author’s Responses, which may be up to 10,000 words. Only recent books (published within the past three years) are considered for Book Symposia.
Commentaries are not expected to summarize the entire content of the book. Instead, they should critically engage with selected claims and arguments. The Editorial Board makes a concerted effort to invite commentators from a variety of countries.
Crítica does not accept unsolicited proposals for Book Symposia. All symposia are reviewed by members of the Editorial Board.
4. Article Symposia
The Editorial Board of Crítica regularly commissions Target Articles by established philosophers, which are then opened to commentaries by experts in the field. Target Articles may either offer an original synthesis of a philosopher’s contributions to a specific topic or present and defend a controversial claim or emerging line of research.
Target Articles may be up to 12,000 words in length (excluding references). Each is followed by six to ten Commentaries (up to 2,000 words each, excluding references) and Author's Responses (up to 10,000 words, excluding references). Up to 50% of the commentaries are solicited by invitation; the remaining are selected through an international call for papers.
Each Article Symposium is organized by one or more Guest Editors, appointed by the Editorial Board. The Guest Editors are responsible for inviting the Target Article author, selecting invited commentators, and overseeing the selection of additional commentaries via the call for papers. Submissions of Target Articles and commentaries are made via email to the Guest Editors. All submissions are reviewed by either external referees or the Guest Editors.
Guest Editors are expected to distribute the call for papers in English and/or Spanish through platforms such as PHILOS-L, PhilEvents, and other relevant channels. Crítica also supports the promotion of the call via its mailing lists and social media accounts. Guest Editors are not permitted to contribute commentaries to their own Article Symposium.
Once the selection process is complete, the Editorial Board of Crítica reviews the full Article Symposium and reserves the right to approve, reject, or request revisions for any of the contributions. The Editorial Board supports Guest Editors throughout the entire process.
Timeline for Article Symposia:
4 months: From the date the invited philosopher agrees to write the Target Article to its submission.
1 month: Review of the Target Article.
2 months: Revisions by the author of the Target Article.
1 month: Copyediting, typesetting, and online publication of the Target Article as an Advance Article.
3 months: From the date of the call for Commentaries to the submission deadline.
1 month: Review of both invited and submitted Commentaries.
1 month: Revisions and resubmission of Commentaries.
1 month: Final editorial decisions on Commentaries.
3 months: Author of the Target Article writes and submits Responses to the Commentaries.
1 month: Review of the Responses.
1 month: Revisions and final submission of the Responses.
1 month: Copyediting and typesetting of the Responses.
After acceptance, each contribution is published online as an Advance Article and later included together in an Article Symposium in a regular issue of Crítica.
5. Survey Articles
The Editorial Board occasionally solicits Survey Articles that review a topic of broad interest within analytic philosophy. These articles are expected to provide a balanced and accessible overview of the state of the art in the chosen topic. They should be understandable to advanced students, instructors, and academic philosophers with limited or no prior familiarity with the relevant literature.
Survey Articles must focus on claims and arguments, rather than on the interpretation of any single philosopher’s work.
Crítica does not accept unsolicited Survey Articles. However, authors interested in preparing one may submit a brief proposal for consideration. Proposals should explain:
The relevance of the topic,
Why a Survey Article on the topic would be a valuable contribution to the literature,
The proposed approach,
And the anticipated structure of the article.
Only pre-approved proposals will be sent out for peer review.
Survey Articles must not exceed 12,000 words (excluding references). They are blind reviewed by two external referees and/or members of the Editorial Board.
6. Reviews
Crítica regularly publishes Reviews of recent books (no older than three years). While the journal welcomes reviews of books from authors worldwide, special attention is given to books authored by scholars from Latin America.
All Reviews are commissioned by the Editor-in-Chief, and Crítica publishes two types:
6.1. Book Reviews
Book Reviews are primarily descriptive. They aim to present the overall content of a book in a way that is accessible to readers unfamiliar with it, while offering a brief assessment of its contribution to the field.
Maximum length: 2,000 words.
No footnotes are allowed.
6.2. Critical Studies
Critical Studies offer a deeper critical engagement with the book. In addition to summarizing its content, they evaluate its main arguments, originality, strengths, and limitations. Authors may also develop their own views and engage with other literature beyond the reviewed book.
Length: 4,000 to 8,000 words (excluding references).
Critical Studies must have an original title.
All Reviews must include the book’s full bibliographic information, including ISBN.
Book Reviews are blind reviewed by one member of the Editorial Board. Critical Studies are blind reviewed by two external referees and/or Editorial Board members.
If you believe a book deserves review in Crítica, or wish to nominate yourself to write a Review, please contact the Editor-in-Chief before submitting a full draft.
Crítica can only provide complimentary copies of books published by UNAM. In other cases, the Editor-in-Chief will make efforts to obtain a digital version of the book free of charge for the reviewer.
